Haulage expert Alan Kaye has become one of only a handful of people throughout the UK to earn a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency Assessor qualification.
The new qualification has been set up by the DVSA as a recognised national standard for assessing lorry drivers.
Says Alan: “Until now there has been no benchmark for assessing an existing driver. With the arrival of a new recognised standard it’s probably only a matter of time before such assessment becomes mandatory,” he added.
Alan, who has held a Class 1 licence since 1984 and driven more than a million miles, says the opportunity to have drivers assessed will enable hauliers to ‘up their game’, in terms of safety and cost control, by proactively reviewing their drivers. “Haulage firms may have an insurance company issue because of existing drivers causing damage or even accidents. If insurers require remedial training for a driver, that’s where an approved assessor comes in.
“My role is not to test the driver, but to spend time with him or her in an environment that has previously proved to be troublesome, and assess their driving. Based on that, I would then submit a written report to the employer with recommendations for remedial training.”
